Ballpark Frank hot dogs came out with magazine and commercial ads that focuses around satisfying the demanding hunger that lies within us. This ad campaign appeals with the need of dominance, the need to achieve, and, of course, the ad fulfills the audience's psychological need of food. The targeted audience is implied as being for men. However, because everyone can associate with the psychological need for food, the general public is who the hot dog ads are addressing.
The campaign personifies a person's feelings of hunger as an actual being. The human arm that protrudes from the actor's stomach is covered in hair. The arm is signifying that within these young males is a territorial, manly being just waiting to dominate over its prey, in this case, Ballpark Frank hot dogs. "Hunger" even gets its own line, "Hunger Gets What Hunger Wants". The actors let their arms portray their feelings, simulating that common social situation when a person's stomach begins to growl for food. The incorrect, "caveman" use of language helps to show that our "hunger" is barbaric, uncivilized, and unwilling to turn the other cheek. Once it senses something it likes "hunger" will not hesitate to take it. Both of the Ballpark Frank ads portray the appeal of dominance, however the commercial portrays this appeal the best.
In the print advertisement for the ballpark franks hot dogs, the male teenager is shown as a baseball player. This makes sense since hot dogs are synonymous as being the food that is commonly eaten at baseball games, hence the name Ballpark Franks. The arm from the baseball player's stomach is muscular with the same hairiness like in the commercial. Not only does this print ad have the need to dominate but also the need to achieve. Ballpark Frank hot dogs associate with these appeals while staying true to the American ideal.
I really enjoy this approach to advertising. I have never seen a hand come from a human stomach, but I find it to be a very convincing metaphor. I think that the clever use of advertising probably gained the company many future consumers. If I were not allergic to red meat, I probably would want to go out and buy some Franks to see how they taste. I especially like the slogan “hunger gets what hunger wants”. This is undoubtedly true to me at least. When I’m hungry, I go out and get whatever it is that I am hungry for. This was a really cool ad that I enjoyed very much.
