For this food blog post I was originally going to talk about some traditional foods that I like eating however I am tired, and need a desperate escape from my adult responsibilities so I decided to take on Jello. Oh golly gee whillikers does Jello take me back, back to a more innocent time. The way it jiggles its way into your heart, it made for an easy snack. I remember always peeking in the refrigerator to see if the jello was ready, I could never hold back my excitement and so a couple hours later by the time jello had finally taken shape the biggest cup of jello usually had some kind of scratch on the surface from my fingers dipping in and out to test its firmness.
Jello is that flexible snack, coming in every kind of color and flavor imaginable. My personal favorite would have to be raspberry jello.
It amazes me how something so simple can be incredible versatile. Its like an edible toy. Children can play games like who can swallow the jello square first without the use of hands. Using their mouth as a suction cup, each person had to slurp the jello into their mouths as fast as possible. Jello can also be made into tons of different shapes thanks to cookie cutters in order to fit any occasion. Jello does not have to be in a cup though, it could also serve as a fancy jello cake. Serve jello in a wine glass pairing it with chopped fruit and whip cream on top. Now you have a great tasting alternative to that guilty pleasure-filled chocolate fudge brownie.
Jello can be too fun that it seems to be more associated to children rather than adults. Last year at the dorms the dining hall would have an assortment of jello squares. I couldn't help but feel a bit childish extending my hand to the blue jello square thinking that everyone behind me was glaring. Thankfully Jello has been able to adapt for grown ups, mixing with alchohol to make jello shots. Although I've honestly never tried a jello shot, it sounds like the only way I'd be able to take any pleasure in jello freely in public. For now I will stick with the original and enjoy some jello while I watch my prime time television here in the comfort of my own home.
Jello is a perfect example to show how food can be reinvented in some many ways. As you said when you eat jello you can feel childish as if changing your personality. However jello can be changed into an adult form of food when we add alcohol in it and make jello shots. It allows individuals to enjoy their childhood snack with a twist to it as well. It seems as though our society today is into the scene of changing our childhood snacks. Look at yogurt now a days there is a craze for "froyo." therefore it seems like the thing to do is change food in it's original form and modernize it.
